Joel Daniel Rodríguez-Rivera was born on September 9th, 1990, at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, New York. A few weeks after he was born, his mother, being a single mom, moved with him to Puerto Rico in hopes of finding comfort and help from her family. Until the age of four, Joel was raised by his grandmother by the flowing waters of Lago Dos Bocas in Utuado. After finding a job and saving enough money, Joel’s mother left with him from his grandmother’s house and rented a house at Bo. Beatriz in Caguas. Because Joel was still young and his mother was working two shifts to cover their expenses, he was often sleeping in other people’s houses. First, he was left at the hands of the new neighbor. Mara M. Delgado Sánchez

Mara Delgado recently earned her BA in English at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and will begin her MFA in Creative Writing with concentration in Fiction at Rosemont College. Her interests include creative writing, particularly fiction since she likes to examine the construction of the text, the characters, their voices, the plot and how these come together to create the work; British literature, where she has drawn inspiration from the works of Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf, American literature, particularly the colonial writings and the Romantic movement, and classical literature. Zoraida Ortiz

Zoraida Ortiz Vazquez, is a multi-media artist, in acrylic, watercolor, ink, and a nature essayist. She has taught eighth grade English at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Intermediate School in Las Marias, Puerto Rico for the past two years. She holds a Teacher’s Certification in English Secondary Level, and a Bachelors Degree from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez in English, Linguistics. She also has an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Data Processing from Hostos Community College in Bronx, New York and she majored in Theatre Arts Scenic Design in the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, New York. It shows by how she presents herself to the world; right down to the Navajo cuff bracelet engraved with two figures sitting by a fire that she wears every day. “They’re storytellers,” says the Montana-born journalist who teaches creative writing at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez.
