WEST SIDE MILKMAN  In my Multimodal Memoir, I talk about my grandfather Rafael Avilés and the Mayagüez milk industry where he worked.  Rafael Avilés was born in a small house made of palm trees in Lajas, Puerto Rico on October 12, 1932 and unfortunately died on November 28, 2006. His father Juan Avilés, a Spaniard, was married to Francisca Ortiz who was a native Puerto Rican Indian.  In 1950, he joined the United States Army, at the age of 18. He retired from the Army in 1960 and became a veteran of the Korean War. He moved to Mayagüez looking for work in 1960 at a place called La Cocora, nowadays known as el Litoral. He started to work in 1964 with the first milk industry of the west side of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Dairy. This milk industry was located in Betances...

THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE CRAYON THAT FELL FROM THE SKY The year was 1974 in Vieques, Puerto Rico. My great-grandmother, Petra Torrens, was watching television on her farm when suddenly she heard this loud BANG! Something had hit the floor really hard. She rushed outside eager to find out what had happened; only to find this huge metal object anchored to the ground. It was of cylindrical shape, and orange. At that point my great-grandmother got really desperate because she didn’t know what she was staring at. She didn’t know it could have exploded at any moment. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a man grabbed her arm and pushed her to make her leave her own house and farm. This man was a marine stationed at Vieques. A few moments later, more military vehicles invaded...

ROBERTO MELÉNDEZ ARCHILLA The multimodal memoir I created is about my grandfather Roberto Melendez Archilla. Roberto Melendez Archilla was on born June 5, 1926 in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, a very poor area at the time. The story is mainly about when my grandfather when to war in Korea in the 1950’s. My grandfather served in the army for 2 years. The video mainly illustrates where the war took place; what position my grandfather had in the United States army; the guns he used and other details of his war experience. I had already interviewed my grandfather before he passed away for other essays I did on his war experience. My father had some pictures he sent  me via email. The only obstacle I had was not having the opportunity to interview my grandfather for more...

A SECOND CHANCE – This story takes place when I was around 6 years old and my mom took me to see 5 Díaz con Nuestra Tierra in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico! I went to the agriculture fair that UPRM does every year, which lasts 5 days. The same as every other kid I wanted a baby chick because they are so cute, small and I happen to love animals.  I asked my mom if she could buy me a chick and the answer was yes!  She bought the small and fragile chick for a 6 year old little girl. Let’s think about the things that could happen. That’s next. So my mom and I took a walk and saw cows, horses, pigs, sheep and other animals. We even saw different kinds of plants and flowers. We got tired of walking and since we had seen everything we left and went home. Once home my mom...

MOTION IS THE DESTRUCTION OF STILLNESS – This is a glimpse into the world that I step into every time I go on a run. It is a continuous story of the evolution of my emotions as I run mile after mile. I usually don’t write, but I felt that the emotion that comes from my running would transfer perfectly to paper. When I finally did this thanks to a project, the relief was enormous, like a massive weight was taken off me. I’m very glad I did it. I downloaded some short clips from commercials, movies, and documentaries that I had seen before. The selected clips were ones that I thought carried the correct feeling that I wanted to portray.  I then put the clips together using Microsoft movie maker. As for the written piece, it was classic pen and paper and a...

SHE IS A VEGETARIAN NOW – This story is about something that I went through with my older sister, Eva, when we were little. It narrates how both of us got grounded because of my sister’s inappropriate behavior. I wanted to share this particular story because I consider it interesting and funny. In addition, “She is a Vegetarian Now” is a story in which Eva – who is more than just a sister to me – is the protagonist. I did not only want to share the event, but also introduce that special person to my classmates. In order to narrate the story I had to create several drawings. I summarized the event in six parts that I represented in drawings. I used white paper, pencils, and crayons. Then, I scanned them to send them to my computer. Once all the...
