June 13, 1931 – December 25, 2010

Mary Fernandez was born on June 13, 1931 to Teresa and Juan Rosario in Spanish Harlem, NY, known as El Barrio by its Puerto Rican residents.  The youngest girl, Mary adored her brothers and sisters.  She had two older sisters, Anna Maria and Ramona Victoria, an older brother named Felix and a younger brother named Alfonso, whom they called Tito.

The Rosario Family, newly migrated from Puerto Rico, endured many hardships in the early years of Mary’s life.  It was the time of The Great Depression, the decade preceding World War II.  Yet despite the hardships, Mary always told stories about the good times shared with her family and friends and the community in which they lived; how they all looked out for each other. Mary was always devoted to her family, especially her mother, Teresa.

Mary was a real, “Latin from Manhattan” and loved her neighborhood, El Barrio.  Her fondest memories were of living at 49 East 102 Street, on the 3rd Floor, a building that was filled with family and girls. Here is where she played with her friends and discovered how to make the best out of life.  El Barrio was a very special neighborhood and life-long relationships were made. She would often say that Central park was her backyard.  Mary was an inquisitive and mischievous child.  One  of her favorite childhood games was, “ring the doorbell and run.”
