KAA

Kaa (Karen Joglar de Gracia) (San Juan, Puerto Rico 1955 – )

A Wednesday, 24th of August, her arrival was marked by a difficult birth, of which only one case among 1,000 would survive.

Feet down, looking up, eyes wide open. There were no cries when she was pulled out. There would be time enough for crying.

Daughter of the marriage of a Home Economics teacher, Flor Amelia de Gracia Barreiro and a man which name she remembers, but whose eternal absence still prohibits her to pronounce it.

At the short age of seven, she wrote her first poem, “A mi hermanita” (To my little sister) dedicated to her older sister Flor. From the period that marked the end of those first verses, she clung to the pencil with her left hand.

“A faraway love brought her back to the verses of the “Luz Oscura” (Dark Light) that are waiting to be born… on their feet…somewhere… looking up… eyes opened…”

–Catalina Barreiro
